Former Brooklyn Dodger Spending the Weekend in Yakima

Posted: Updated:

YAKIMA, Wash.--George Shuba is a former outfielder for the Brooklyn Dodgers. As much as he is known for his achievement on the diamond, he is even more famous for shaking the hand of Jackie Robinson.

That simple gesture played a pivotal role in breaking down the color barrier in Major League Baseball. Friday afternoon at the Hilton hotel in downtown Yakima, Shuba spoke about a man who he says was determined to fight for what he believed in.

"We all knew he was a great competitor," says Shuba. His baseball ability was superceded by his crusade to break the color barrier. So, we all really respected him."

Shuba will be in Yakima on January 19th and 20th, signing autographs at the Brooklyn Baseball Club Saturday. He will also be involved with an auction and dinner event at the Yakima Convention Center Saturday night.
