Who is a Real Hero?

As a community leader in emergency preparedness, prevention and response, the American Red Cross honors individuals whose extraordinary acts of courage and kindness make them real heroes. Each year we honor local heroes in eight categories:

Spirit of the Red Cross
Presented to a local Red Cross volunteer who exemplifies the mission of the American Red Cross to prevent and alleviate human suffering in the face of emergencies.

Humanitarian Hero
Presented to an ordinary citizen who used lifesaving skills to save or attempt to save the lives of others or has helped to improve the welfare of their community.

Animal Rescue Hero
Presented to an animal that has protected a human or another animal in a time of need, or a person who has rescued an animal from a traumatic situaion.

Service to the Armed Forces Hero
Presented to an individual or organization who has demonstrated a commitment to helping the Armed Forces community (Veterans, active duty or military families)

Community Organization Hero
Presented to a neighborhood organization or local company that demonstrates a commitment to making a difference in the community.

Citizen Rescue Hero
Presented to an ordinary citizen using lifesaving skills to rescue an individual.

Emergency Services Hero
Presented to a professional first responder (firefighter, EMT, law enforcement officer, medical professional, dispatcher, etc.) whose lifesaving action goes above and beyond the call of duty.

Blood Donation Hero
Presented to a member of our community dedicated to saving lives through blood donation.

Heroes are selected based on the degree to which their acts of heroism uphold the values of the American Red Cross and leave a lasting and positive impact on the residents of our local community.
