Becoming a U.S. citizen can cost you thousands of dollars, but today about one hundred people were given free legal assistance in their journey to become an American.
The message seemed to carry across the board this afternoon. The event was about changing lives and gaining more rights, including the right to vote. It also means some will be eligible for certain government jobs and their children will automatically become U.S. citizens. Furthermore, each person will be able to receive a passport.
"It means more freedom. I'm a legal resident at this time, so right now, it will give me the freedom to make my voice heard for things that I believe in. I'm just excited," local resident Maria Hamilton said.
This was one of four similar events throughout the state. After today the rest of the process will still take up to six months and each person must pass a final test before obtaining a certificate.
