SELAH--The Selah Fire Department is getting a boost thanks to a grant from FEMA.
The department's getting $3600 from the agency to upgrade equipment that fills the firefighters' oxygen tanks.
Grants from years past paid for 90 percent of projects the department needed, but this grant will only pay for half of the upgrade.
But, the chief doesn't expect that to be a problem.
"I can come up with the money for the rest of it in the budget," Chief Jerry Davis said. "It [the grant] saves our taxpayers a lot of money and gets us a little safer and [allows us] to do our job better."
Davis says this is the fourth grant the department has received in the past five years, totalling about $500,000.
Davis plans to apply for a grant again this year, but isn't sure what for yet.
