WAPATO--The FBI is investigating a homicide on Yakama Nation land in Wapato.
The body was found on the basketball court at Apas Goudy Park in Wapato. Tribal police had the housing project on Larena Lane around the basketball court locked down this afternoon, only letting residents in and advising them to stay inside their homes.
Even though this is in Wapato, that small area is Yakama Nation property.
Tribal land is considered federal property, so that's why the FBI has been called in.
"The FBI has criminal jurisdiction on Indian Reservations for any major crime and that would be any crime involving serious injury, death, anything that's going to involve a potential penalty of a year or more...a felony."
Yakima County Coroner Maurice Rice said the victim is a middle-aged man. He said the man had no identification on him and they couldn't immediately tell how he died.
Authorities do believe that the man is a member of the Yakama Nation.
The county coroner's office will perform an autopsy tomorrow.
