The Navy will drop turbines in the water off Marrowstone Island next year to test how the tides could generate electricity.
Engineers at Naval Base Kitsap are working with turbine and marine architects on the study.
Navy spokeswoman Sheila Murray says turbines with 8-foot blades would be placed in water about 50 feet deep. They should generate enough electricity to light a parking lot or small building at the
Navy's ammunition depot on Indian Island. After a year-long test, the turbines will be removed in 2011. The Kitsap Sun reports the project follows a congressional mandate for Defense agencies to generate 25 percent of the power by 2025 from renewable sources. --- Information from: Kitsap Sun, http://www.kitsapsun.com/
