YAKIMA, Wash. - Yakima Police called their latest DUI emphasis patrol "quite productive" on Wednesday morning, an early estimate showed four DUI arrests and 16 citations for traffic violations overnight.
Sgt. Mike Costello of the Yakima Police Department says this program tries to remind everyone to think of others as well as themselves. He says it is important for everyone to think about the impact their actions can have when they go out at night.
"We're not trying to tell them not to go out and have fun, relax, and enjoy themselves just be responsible while they're doing it," he said.
Officers working emphasis patrol started a six-hour shift at 9:00 p.m. Tuesday. By early Wednesday morning, they were back at headquarters processing those DUIs and citations.
Costello also says that these emphasis patrols will be happening throughout the year. This was just one of many they are planning and not all of them will be for DUIs.
"We'll actually be doing it throughout the year not only for DUIs but other crime trends that we see throughout the year," said Costello.
