BUTTE, Mont. (AP) - Witness Steve Guidoni (gwuh-DOH'nee) says a small plane that crashed short of the runway in Butte, Montana, "just went straight into the ground."
Seven adults and seven children died when the plane nosed into a cemetery and burst into flames while trying to land.
The plane was carrying a group of people from California to Montana.
Guidoni says he went over to try to help but "there was nothing left" of the plane.
An investigator with the National Transportation Safety Board says the investigation is just beginning. A news conference is scheduled this afternoon.
The single engine turboprop plane was rated for 12 people and typically seats 6 to 9 passengers plus 1 or 2 pilots.
A California newspaper, the Napa Valley Register, reports that the victims include a family of 5 from St. Helena, California. Three were pre-schoolers.
