Cubs' 5-3 Victory In 6 innings Over Mariners

The Seattle Mariners will continue their Cactus League schedule with a game today against the San Francisco Giants, after losing yesterday to the Chicago White sox, 5-3.

Mariners pitcher Erik Bedard threw 47 pitches in 2 2-3 innings on Sunday. He will get two more starts before the opener at Houston on April 6.

Bedard, whose season ended early last year because of surgery to remove a cyst from his left shoulder, has been bothered by sore buttocks. He pitched on March 5, but not again until March 16, when he threw one inning.

Beltre is quiet leader for M's

PEORIA, Ariz. (AP) - As the Seattle Mariners look to rebound after a 101-loss season, a lot of attention has been focused on Ken Griffey Jr.'s return and the prospect of having fellow slugger Mike Sweeney on the team.

But 1 of the team leaders is likely to be its quiet third baseman, Adrian Beltre.

Seattle manager Don Wakamatsu calls Beltre "a true ambassador" for his professionalism, his dedication and maturity.

A 2-time Gold Glove winner for Seattle, the 29-year-old Beltre proved that to Wakamatsu early in spring training.

Invited to play for the Dominican Republic in the World Baseball Classic, Beltre was ready to jump at the opportunity, only to be told by Mariners' brass he wouldn't be going, because they wanted to monitor his recovery from thumb and shoulder surgeries.

Beltre didn't complain, and Wakamatsu says it impressed team managers that he didn't sulk.

Wakamatsu says he expects right-handed pithers Felix Hernandez and Carlos Silva, second baseman Jose Lopez and outfielder Endy Chavez to be in camp today. The four played for Venezuela, which was eliminated by Korea in the semifinals of the WBC on Saturday. Hernandez and Silva could pitch in Cactus League games by next weekend while Lopez and Chavez may play for Seattle against San Francisco on Monday.
