YAKIMA--Yakima sheriffs shut down an off-ramp of Interstate 82 after they stop two jaywalkers and find a pipe bomb in a bag.
A sheriff's deputy spotted the jaywalkers about 10:00 as.m. on Exit 31A just off First Street.
He alerted the Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms division (ATF) after finding a bottle similar to a pipe bomb.
Soldiers from the Yakima Training Center defused the device that contained shotgun shell powder.
It was a small explosive, but Yakima Sheriffs weren't taking any chances.
"What we will do is continue the investigation and see where it leads," Dep. Aaron Wuitschick said. "Our first [objective] was to get that device and make it safe so that nobody gets hurt."
The jaywalkers said they were walking from the city center to a trailer park by the exit, and found the device a few minutes before being stopped by the deputy.
Deputies said their story checks out and they were released.
