Driver in critical condition after causing 4-car accident
SELAH--One man is in critical condition from a four-car accident on North Wenas Road in Selah. It happened about 8:00 a.m. Friday morning.
One driver told me he saw a man driving very fast in his rearview mirror. He said he immediately knew he was going to get hit.
A state trooper said Roger Smith first hit this mailbox on North Wenas Road, then he rammed a white pickup from behind.
But, Smith kept going and hit a gray pickup head-on before nearly forcing a smaller car off the road.
Smith totalled the gray minivan he was driving. As of press time, he was in critical condition at Memorial Hospital. Only one other person, the driver of the gray pickup needed treatment, and she was in stable condition at Memorial as of press time.
One passenger watched the whole scene unfold.
"Out of nowhere we just saw a van plowing through a couple trucks and coming right at us," Amador Navarro said. "The white truck [the driver] crashed into, the whole back just rose in the air. It looked like it [was going to] flip over."
Two young kids were in child seats in the white pickup. Fortunately, they were not hurt.
A state trooper says they're not sure why Smith was driving at such high speeds. They are investigating.
Smith will be cited for speeding but troopers don't expect to file any more charges at this time.
