More People Turning to Homebrewing to Save Money

Posted: Updated:

KENNEWICK, Wash. -- Local brewers are seeing a surge in people wanting to learn how to brew their own beer.

Ice Harbor Brewery in Kennewick has been offering homebrewing classes for a few months and workers say they're often booked weeks in advance. Brewers at Ice Harbor say it likely has something to do with the economy.

"People might want to save a little bit of cash here and there", said Frank Cooper, assistant brewer. "They figure, hey, I can make five gallons of beer for $40 dollars or I can go buy five gallons for a whole lot more than that".

Cooper says the process is actually a lot simpler than people think.

The homebrewing classes generally have about 15 students each. To make a reservation, you can call Ice Harbor Brewery at 509-582-5340.
