Car Thefts Down In Washington But Yakima Still Ranked Third in the Country
KENNEWICK, Wash.-- The state has gone down 25% in the number of car thefts, that's according to the National Insurance Crime Bureau.
While we're down as a state, Yakima is the number one city in Washington with the highest number of car thefts. Close to 2,000 last year.
Yakima is also ranked third in the country. Tri-cities ranks 8th in Washington. In Kennewick police say drivers who park at apartment complexes could be at a higher risk to lose their cars.
"Apartment complexes are obviously going to be targeted simply because they don't have garage units, so all the cars are parked in the parking lot and you don't have that kind of neighborhood patrol," Shirrell Veitenheimer, with the Kennewick Police Department.
Topping the list of the most stolen cars in Washington is the 92 Honda Accord. The 95 Honda Civic comes in second and the 89 Toyota Camry takes the third place.
Kennewick police say Accura Integras are also high on the list.
