Have a Greener Lawn this SummerPosted: Updated:
PASCO, Wash - We all fight the battle in the hot summer months to keep our lawns green and healthy. Tom Perkes with Senske Lawn and Tree Care in Kennewick says right now is the most important time if you want to impress your neighbors with green grass this summer.
"For a lawn to be healthy and full during the summer the first thing that needs to happen is to build a good root base for it in the spring time," explains Perkes.
Once that happens, things start to take care of themselves.
"If the lawn can build up a good turf base and it can have a good foundation, it will choke out most of the weeds," says Perkes.
Here are the steps you can take now to have a healthy lawn in a couple months.
First, Check all sprinkles to make sure they are working. Next, let the lawn know you're there.
"When you start to mow your lawn it wakes the lawn back up. The grass comes out of it's hibernation and it starts to grow and at that time it's really hungry and thirsty because it's been asleep all winter," explains Perkes.
Now it's time to set a watering schedule. Perkes recommends leaving a day or two between each watering session. For the bigger parts of your lawn, water 30-45 minutes each time. The small areas require about 10-15 minutes.
Take these steps now and you'll be happy you did in the summer.
