City Council Votes Down Curfew Meeting The Police, Legal Department Recommendations
The city of Yakima is not going to have a curfew anytime soon.
Yesterday the city council voted down the proposed curfew ordinance. Supporters believed it would help combat the city's graffiti problem. The state Supreme Court requires statistical evidence to prove a compelling interest for a curfew.
Cynthia Martinez is the Senior Assistant City Attorney for the City of Yakima. She says the city just doesn't have the numbers to meet court requirements.
"I understand their frustration, I myself have been a victim of graffiti numerous times, the data shows that most of this is occurring during school hours."
Martinez says the focus needs to be on keeping kids in school and reporting more cases of graffiti to the police.
