Fatal Accident in Wapato Leaves Hundreds Without Power For Hours

Posted: Updated:

WAPATO, Wash. - A car accident Wednesday night killed one woman and cut power to hundreds of customers in the area while spilling hazardous material on the road.

Angela Bueno, 43, was traveling south on Campbell road when she hit two power poles, according to Washington State Patrol. The power poles were supporting two large power regulators, which fell onto the car below causing a fire.

One of the two regulators was holding cooling oil that leaked about 50 gallons of PCB's, a hazardous material, onto the ground. The spilled oil was contained and decontaminated by crews from Pacific Power.

About 600 to 800 customers lost power for about six hours as well as the traffic signal at SR 97 and West Wapato Road, Pacific Power said.  The power was turned back on around midnight.

State Patrol says there was never a risk to the residents surrounding the accident while the leak was being contained.

The cause of the accident is still under investigation.
