PASCO, Wash. -- April 24th is Arbor Day and if you're planting a tree for the first time, there are a few basic tips you should know before you get started.
Alex Job, manager of Job's Nursury in Pasco, says the first step is picking out a tree that fits your yard. A tree that's too big or planted too close to your home can cause structural damage as it grows. Job says watering and fertilizing are critical because the soil in our region doesn't contain a lot of nutrients.
According to Job, one tree can give off enough oxygen to last a family of four an entire year.
"Every little bit helps and Arbor Day makes it fun", said Job. "That's really what tree planting should be is more of a fun activity, versus being a chore".
You can get a tree at Job's for as little as $60. Workers there say a tree can also increase your property value and also lower energy costs because of the shade it provides.
