David Burks Sentenced to 8 Years in Florida Prison
TRI-CITIES, Wash-- David Burks was convicted about a month ago and Thursday the judge in Saint Lucie County Florida handed down an eight-year sentence.
The 47 year-old West Richland man will serve time for arranging to have sex with a child in Florida through a website called open-minded parents.
Burks thought he was communicating with the father of an 11 year-old girl, but it was actually a detective. Police said Burks was on a business trip in Fort Lauderdale when he was arrested last year.
He will serve eight years for solicitation of sexual battery on a child and five years for lewd computer solicitation of a parent about their child. The sentences will be served at the same time.
"I've been practicing now for 13 years in all that time I can tell you that David Burks and his family are people that I truly believed in. I'm disappointed that we lost the trial. The notice of appeal has already been filed," said Arthur Brandt, Attorney for Burks.
Burks asked the judge for leniency saying he is not a threat to anyone and would never harm a child. At the hearing though the Assistant State Attorney in Saint Lucie County asked the judge to sentence him to 35 years in prison.
