Lower Valley Firefighters Train for Water Rescues

Posted: Updated:

ZILLAH--Lower Valley firefighters train to save you from drowning.  Yakima County Fire District 5 held its annual water rescue training Friday.

They've got a new raft this year to go out on lakes and rivers.  As the weather gets warmer safety on the water is a bigger concern.

One firefighter says most problems come from people underestimating the water's speed.

"A couple feet of water can sweep a 180-200 pound person right off their feet in a heartbeat," Capt. Dave Martin said.  "Before they know it they're swimming downstream and people have a tendency to underestimate [the water's power]."

Martin said many people also aren't ready for how cold the water is despite the nice weather outside.

The best way to stay safe?  Wear a lifejacket.
