Will State Taxes Increase Now that Washington Legislative Session Ends?
WASHINGTON. - All session long, Washington Legislators have been saying, now is the worst time to tax people even more than they're being taxed. Instead of seeing any huge tax increases, lawmakers chose to cut the budget instead.
State workers will see their health costs increase by 3-percent. Thousands of state workers could lose their jobs. A 43% reduction in the state basic health plan could cut 40,000 people from the program.
But Governor Christine Gregoire said this was no easy decision to make. "They did not want vote for that budget at all. But that's why I give them credit because I asked them to step up with courage, to make decisions they never would have anticipated having to make in their careers, and they did."
But some lawmakers say even though there's little talk of tax increases, state fees often are an unofficial substitution.
