YAKIMA, Wash. - Cinco de Mayo is Tuesday but most of Yakima has already celebrated the holiday.
The Hispanic Chamber of Commerce sponsored a series of events this past weekend. Official numbers are not out but they say turnout was strong. They believe it was definitely one of the biggest events ever in Yakima.
Maria Garcia is a volunteer with the chamber. She says the economy, swine flu, and the rain didn't hold people back.
"It went really well regardless of the rain on Saturday," she said. "People were enjoying themselves, a lot of dancing, so they didn't care it was raining so it was fun."
Staff say the presence of Spanish media helped to bring more people to the event this year. They say many outsiders from across the state made the trip to Yakima just for the celebration.
