DSHS Seeing an Increase in People Applying for Aid Compared to Last Year
YAKIMA, Wash-- Statewide welfare applications are up. Yakima, Ellensburg and Sunnyside have all seen significant increases in people applying for help. The local DSHS office is always busy.
Workers have seen a 20% increase in people applying for food stamps since this time last year. DSHS spokesperson, Yolanda McGrann, sights two reasons. First, the governor has increased the poverty guidelines, allowing more people to qualify. And second, plenty of people are out of work.
"Our increase has mostly been in food benefits, which means there are a lot of people out there that are needy," said McGrann.
McGrann said the Sunnyside area has been hit really hard because of job losses. If you think you may qualify for assistance contact your local DSHS office.
