Arson Awareness Week, Arson for Profit and Insurance Fraud

Posted: Updated:

YAKIMA, Wash-- Yakima has the highest per capita arson rate in the state of Washington, which makes Arson Awareness Week especially important for our area.

Arson for profit is this year's focus. Homes, businesses, and cars have all been set on fire to collect insurance money. This illegal act impacts the community in three ways according to the Yakima Fire Department. First, people can die in arson fires. Insurance rates get hiked by fraudulent claims. Also, local fire and police departments use-up valuable resources to solve arson fires.

Yakima has seen a reduction in arson fires in recent years because they do prosecute arsonists. Here are some tips to prevent arson fires:
Make sure your home or business is well lit.
Safely store flammable materials like gasoline.
And report suspicious activity, witnesses play a key role in solving arson crimes.
The arson tip line is 800-55-ARSON.

The Yakima Fire Department offers an award for arson tips that lead to an arrest.
