Children's Mental Health Awareness Day

YAKIMA, Wash. - Yakima County marked Children's Mental Health Awareness Day on Thursday as part of a month long campaign to improve the community's understanding of the issue.

County staff say there is a need to have more of a focus on the needs of children with mental health needs as well as their families.

Lauri Leaverton is with Yakima County Human Services Department, she says the community has to work to improve their understanding of the issue.

"There's a lot of stigma attached to it in our society and our culture," she said.  "We're working hard to try and raise the awareness that people are people, everybody has needs."

The department asks supporters to wear green ribbons all this month.  Recent numbers show one in five children between 12 and 17 received care for a mental health issue.
