Federal Stimulus Package Generating Hundreds of Jobs

Posted: Updated:

KENNEWICK, Wash--  Looking to rev up a stale economy?  Uncle Sam is doing his best, starting with the Ben Franklin Transit.

"Close to $3 million.  That's a nice chunk of change for us," says Kathy McMullan of BFT.

It's all thanks to the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.  But the federal stimulus money comes with some guidelines; think of it as the do's and the dont's.

"The money has to be spent for either a new building, rail lines, roads or buses, it can't be used to pay salaries per se," adds McMullan.

Already the BFT plans to re-model their transit building.

"This should create 45-55 new jobs.   We have an engineering firm helping us do the final design of the building, we should have construction documents by the end of the summer and then we should start hiring people to do the construction."

Remember the Hanford job fair last April?  It generated hundreds of jobs for CH2M Hill Plateau Remediation Company thanks to $1.3 billion.

Forget just wanting a job, here they are doing it--100 new employees.

"We expect another 70 steel workers Monday morning to begin their training," adds Dan Cartmell.

And they expect that number to keep growing.

"We're eventually going to ramp up.   We think probably in the fiscal year 2010 we will reach between ourselves and our pre-selected sub-contractors 1700 new jobs."
