Coeur d'Alene murder suspect taken into custodyPosted: Updated:
COEUR d'ALENE, Idaho - The Coeur d'Alene Police Department is investigating a homicide that occurred at 2:17am Saturday morning in the vicinity of 3rd and Indiana. The victim was a 21-year-old male from the Coeur d'Alene area. Police say he was attending college out of the area and had returned home to Coeur d'Alene on Friday.
Witnesses stated the victim and his friends were at the local bar Mik n Maks, and the victim had a verbal altercation with the male suspect. The suspect was asked to leave the bar by the management.
A few hours later at closing time the victim and his friends were walking in the area of 3rd and Indiana. The suspect pulled up to them in his vehicle and fired one shot from a handgun striking the victim in the head. The suspect immediately fled the area. The victim was transported to KMC and was later pronounced clinically dead. His name will not be released due to pending notification of his family.
Police described the suspect as a Hispanic male, early 20's, short dark colored hair/slightly longer on top, small amount of facial hair on lower chin, 5'4 to 5'8, slender build, slight Hispanic accent, but well spoken English, well dressed in a light colored button up shirt and jeans, and mirrored sunglasses while in the bar. The suspect later was seen wearing a light colored hoodie sweatshirt and a black ball cap on backwards while sitting in his vehicle. Possibly diamond studded ear rings in both ears.
The suspect was driving a dark colored passenger car, possibly a 2 door, 1995 to 2000, in the similar style of a Honda Civic or Ford Escort. Custom rims and tail lights, modified exhaust/muffler, halogen headlights, tinted windows, possible damage on lower portion of driver's door. The rear window has a 6 to 8 inch sticker with an "A" on it possibly for the Atlanta Braves.
At 11:20 Saturday morning police took an adult male into custody in connection with the murder of the 21-year-old victim, after police received information from area law enforcement officers that they had previous contact with a vehicle matching the description of the suspects.
Based on that information detectives were able to learn the name of the registered owner of the vehicle, and through further investigation learned where the suspect worked. The Post Falls S.W.A.T. team assisted Coeur d'Alene Police with the apprehension of 22-year-old Juan C. Aldana Villanueva of Post Falls. Police arrested Vilanueva at his place of employment, Toro Viejo Mexican restaurant located in the 700 block of Cecil Road in Post Falls. Police say the S.W.A.T. team assisted due to the possibility that the suspect was armed and dangerous.
There were no patrons in the business when the police gained access to the building. Police say there were approximately four employees inside the restaurant at the time, and they claimed they didn't know where Villauneva was in the building. S.W.A.T. members cleared every room and found Vilanueva locked inside a restroom. Officers ordered him to come out and he complied.
Villanueva was arrested for first degree murder and taken into custody. Detectives are still in process of interviewing witnesses and collecting evidence.
