Steamy Espresso Stands Not Breaking the Law According to Attorney
YAKIMA, Wash-- Community members are steaming about controversial bikini-barista stands. Tuesday night city council members heard testimony from people opposed to the espresso stands.
Some claim the attire worn by barista's is offensive. Assistant City Attorney Cynthia Martinez shared a legal perspective with council. She said the espresso stands are not currently violating the indecent exposure ordinance. Martinez added that the stands also don't fall under adult business ordinances.
One local owner said that council members should come check-out the coffee shop for themselves.
"Our girls are probably wearing more clothing than you would see at a beach," said Jodi, owner Moulin Brew Espresso.
Jodi said they have loyal customers, men and women. But, the barista's have been harassed by people against the coffee stands. She also said that her stand has dimmed lights and taken other steps to make the girls less visible to people passing by.
Martinez will now do more research about regulating the espresso stands and report back to city council.
