Car Demolishes Yakima Home; No One Injured

Posted: Updated:

YAKIMA--Police say a drunk driver fell asleep at the wheel then plowed right into a house in Yakima.  The good news:  no one was injured.

One man inside the home told police he was in the kitchen last night when a car came crashing in.

The car ended up in the living room.

Police say the driver, 56-year old Andres Velasquez, was on 6th Street around 2:00 a.m.

Officers say he veered off the road and ran over a fence before smashing into the house on the 500 block of 6th Street.

A neighbor said he got home just a few minutes before the car drove through his front yard.

"Next thing you know I just hear something hit my gate, like a car crash," Herman Mendoza said.  "I come up and I just see this."

Three people live in the house, fortunately none of them were in the living room at that time.

Police say the car did so much damage that they can't tow it out because the whole house would collapse.

Damage is estimated at $50,000.

Both families say they do have insurance and will be able to repair their property.

Velasquez, the driver, was also not injured.  Police say he will be charged with DUI.
