YAKIMA, Wash. - Jack Hawkins was sworn in as coroner for Yakima County Tuesday at the commissioners' weekly meeting.
He has already started serving as coroner after being selected out of three finalists earlier this month to replace Maurice Rice. Hawkins was also the interim replacement immediately after Rice retired in March.
Hawkins says he understands the responsibility that comes with the position.
"My job here is of course to serve the citizens, the families of Yakima County and I intend to do so with the utmost dignity," he said.
The coroner's office has been busy since he took the position. He says he spent the majority of the past long weekend at work.
The county still needs to fill the position Hawkins had previously with the coroner's office. He says they are beginning the process of searching for candidates and posting the opening.
