Organizers Prepare for Gap 2 Gap 2009, Cancel Boating Leg
YAKIMA, Wash. - Organizers for the 25th annual Gap 2 Gap 2009 relay race made final preparations on Friday in Sarg Hubbard Park.
The multi-leg event will be all day Saturday with the most challenging race totally more than 50 miles based on initial plans. But Yakima County Search Rescue officials decided Friday morning that the river levels would not be safe for the adult canoe / kayaking leg of the relay.
There will be a fjeld run, mountain bike leg, as well as a rollerblading leg making up some of the different races.
Jeff Brantner is the deputy director for the Yakima Greenway and says he wants teams taking part in the relay to walk away with a sense of accomplishment.
"You put a team together and it's a feeling of being able to do it and keeping yourself in shape but also support the greenway," he said.
The relay has been broken into multiple races for all ages and skill levels. The last chance to register is Friday evening.
Packet-Pickup will be at Sarg Hubbard Park from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. The relay runs from 7:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. on Saturday and the public is welcome to come watch.
