Biggest Citywide Yard Sale in Benton City this WeekendPosted: Updated:
BENTON CITY, Wash-- In such troubling economic times, many are finding ways to cut back on costs. This weekend in Benton City the entire city was holding a garage sale. This is the fifth year the town has had this sale.
The Benton City economic developer tells KNDU this year was the biggest yet. So what was everyone searching for? Mostly, just a good deal.
If you can't buy it new, you may consider buying it used. Take Roger Edwards for example he found two chairs for $80.
"I think they run you about $250 to $350 bucks if you bought them at a furniture store new. They are a little bit worn but they're in pretty good shape," said Roger Edwards.
Edwards is in the middle of a do-it yourself remodel to his home. He says tough economy or not he's moving forward with the project adding he's not the only one trying to cut costs.
"I think a lot of people are being spend thrifty with their money and stuff. You know a lot of them have to be," said Edwards.
The Benton City economic developer says shoppers flocked from all over the region to find that special deal. The hot item of the day is just about anything for kids.
"Folks up here work hard but we all have kids to raise. We all have clothes we have to buy for them and they all get out of them before they're bad so they can rotate those," said Randy Rutledge, Economic Developer.
One local says yard sales are vital to the community in a tough economy.
"It's pennies on the dollar to shop at a yard sale and people just can't afford that disposable income here. they can't pay full price at this point," said Charlene McCormick, who was having a yard sale.McCormick teamed up with other families to have one big sale. She says not only is it fun making extra money but it's also a good time to catch up with old friends.
