YAKIMA, Wash. - Police Chief Sam Granato announced a new operation to take on gang violence in the city Monday at the City Media Briefing in response to recent shootings on Roosevelt Blvd.
Granato says he wants the program to send a clear message to gang members.
"We're not putting up with this," he said. "You guys are going to be shooting at each other, we're gonna be there [arresting] you and if you're violating the law, we're gonna take you off the streets."
The new operation started last Thursday and includes 20 officers from the department's traffic and gang units.
Granato says the new program will be staffed seven days a week but will avoid excessive overtime.
Yakima police already has two emphasis projects happening this summer in high crime areas that are funded by federal grants.
