Give Schools Zone a Summer Brake

Posted: Updated:
Kennewick, WA- The kids may be out for summer vacation, but if you're driving past a school and see a flashing yellow light, it's for real.

Many schools throughout the Mid Columbia have started summer sessions, and in the morning and noon hours, the flashing yellow lights will be warning drivers to slow down.

But if you don't see the flashing yellow, that doesn't give you a green light to speed. Educators say it's a safe bet that kids are playing nearby.

"Anytime you're coming near a school zone, flashing light or no, take extra caution," says Kennewick Schools Communication Director Lorraine Cooper. "If you see that yellow light blinking, please slow down to 20 miles per hour."

Some schools, including Highlands Middle School in Kennewick are holding summer sessions, but don't have flashing yellow lights in the school zones.

Summer school will continue through the end of July.
