YAKIMA - The Arizona Diamondbacks agreed to terms with compensation-pick Matt Davidson, a slugging prep third baseman out of California, and have assigned him to Yakima for the 2009 season.
Davidson, from Yucaipa High, hit .553 with 11 home runs and 45 runs batted in during his 30-game senior season according to Maxpreps.com. Scouts have said he should be a middle-of-the-order bat on a contending team, with one west-coast scout tabbing Davidson as the best power bat he's seen this spring.
The 6'3" 210-pounder, taken with the 35th overall pick in this year's draft, is the highest player the D-backs selected that they have signed so far.
Arizona is expected to release the full 2009 Yakima Bears roster Wednesday.
The Yakima Bears begin their season June 20in Spokane, with the home opener scheduled for June 23 against the Eugene Emeralds. Single-game tickets, season tickets and seven new mini plans are on sale now at the new downtown Bears office at 17 N. 3rd Street, Suite 101 and online at yakimabears.com.
