Sunnyside Police Department Gives Out Free Steering Wheel Locks

Posted: Updated:

SUNNYSIDE, Wash-- The Sunnyside Police Department wants you to take advantage of a free give-a-way. They have 100 steering wheel locks to give to the public.

It's all part of an extra effort to curb car theft. They started giving them away Tuesday evening. So far they've only given away a handful, but hope people will take advantage. Owners of Honda civics and accords are encouraged to pick one up. These are the cars stolen most often.

"We shoot to recover your car however, usually when we recover them they're wrecked or burned I mean they are not coming back to you in the same condition that they were stolen in," said Charlotte Hinderlinder, Sunnyside Police Department.

The locks were purchased with grant money aimed at auto theft prevention. It's also funding extra patrols. Locks are given out on a first come first serve basis.
