Firefighters and Bomb Technicians Show How Deadly Fireworks Are

Posted: Updated:
YAKIMA, Wash.- With already one brush fire ignited by fireworks this summer, firefighters want to remind everyone that they are illegal.

To show how dangerous fireworks really are, firefighters and bomb technicians lit some on fire, showing the damage they cause. Two popular fireworks in Yakima County are M 80's and mortars. Both are illegal. Bomb technicians say fireworks and improvised explosive devices can be deadly.

"Powders can so set off so easily it just takes a little friction and people can have a disaster in their homes or even kills themselves," said Sergeant Tom Foster from Washington State Patrol.

Yakima Sheriff Deputies will be patrolling the area to confiscate any fireworks. Fireworks are illegal in Yakima County. The only exception is for registered Yakama tribal members, who can purchase and use fireworks in designated tribal areas.
