Hybrid Tax Exemption Ends July 31st

Posted: Updated:

KENNEWICK, Wash. - If you want a hybrid, now is the time to buy. The last day to purchase certain hybrid vehicles tax free is July 31st.

There's only a few dozen hybrids left in town, but more are expected to come in, especially since time is running out to avoid sales tax.

Car dealers around the area are expecting a rush on hybrids this month. New hybrids that get more than 40 miles per gallon on the highway will be tax exempt.

The goal is to get more fuel friendly vehicles on Washington roads. If you buy now, it could save you thousands of dollars.

"Depending on the value of the vehicle. If you buy a vehicle at $26,000, just figure 8.6%, so it will probably save you about $2,300 dollars," said Sales Manager, Jesse Arriaga and McCurley Honda in Kennewick.

The sales tax exemption was going to last for two years up until December 31st of 2010.  But that was repealed by the legislature and changed to August 1st of 2009.
