Wong: A Proven WinnerPosted: Updated:
PASCO, Wash. -- Dust Devils Shortstop Joey Wong is a proven winner. He did it in college at Oregon State and is now helping the Dust Devils stay on the winning track.
Wong was part of the 2007 Oregon State Beaver team that won it all, winning the NCAA National Championship.
Drafted in the 24th round by the Colorado Rockies after his junior season ay OSU , the shortstop knows his experience as a Beaver will help.
"I think just being in that type of competitive situation helps," said Wong. Playing for a national championship is about as competitive as it gets at the college level so I think coming in here, it makes you better as far as competing with the guys around the league."
"It's a great experience, playing in front of 10,000 or 15,000 people when he went to the College World Series," said Dust Devils Manager Freddy Ocasio. "So, it's a great experience. You are playing in a good conference. It's going to help him out. He's a pretty good defensive player and so far, so good. He's done a good job."
"We've had some Beaver fans coming to the games so that's been kind of cool to hear the O.S.U. Crew getting after it," said Wong.
Wong batted .255 his junior year with the Beavers and is hitting .256 so far with the Dust Devils. He has also played a solid shortstop with just two errors in 14 games.
Wong has brought the winning ways of Oregon State to the Dust Devils, who are off to their best start ever.
