July is adult abuse prevention month..

The State Department of Social and Health Services is calling for people to be aware and keep their eyes and ears alert for signs of possible abuse or neglect.

In 2008 the D-S-H-S Adult Protective Services office received fourteen thousand two hundred eighty eight reports of alleged mistreatment of adults who are vulnerable because of their age or disability.

However, it's estimated that only 1 in 5 cases of abused adults are reported.

"it's always better to be safe than sorry.. and if you know that somebody is vulnerable and they may have a problem I'd say report it and let the professionals sort it out and figure out if there really is a problem." Says Virginia Janin of Aging and Long Term Care.

If you suspect a vulnerable adult is facing harm because of criminal activity contact your local police department immediately by calling 911.
You may also report abuse by calling 1-866-END-HARM . That's 1-866-END-HARM .
