In a battle between the two veterans in the sport of unlimited hydroplane racing, Dave Villwock in the U-16 Miss Elam Plus out paced Steve David in the U-1 Oh Boy! Oberto.

Villwock edged out David who led the evening qualifying for the 100th running of the APBA Gold Cup on Friday in the last minute of qualifying when he posted a speed of 158.098 mph knocking David out by .719 mph.

"That is a blink of an eye, close but no cigar," David said after he learned Villwock was top qualifier.  "I still can't believe it," David said.

The two had been battling all day for top position.  "We are not going to chase their tail," David said.

Villwock who came over to apologize said, "We really didn't think they were going to count it, we just wanted to go test the boat."

Heat racing begins Saturday with the winner-take-all final on Sunday.
