DETROIT GOLD CUP 2009: U-16 Dave Villwock, U-1 Steve David win Heats 3A, 3B - NBC Right Now/KNDO/KNDU Tri-Cities, Yakima, WA |

DETROIT GOLD CUP 2009: U-16 Dave Villwock, U1 Steve David each go 3-for-3 in Unlimited Hydroplane heat wins

Heat 3A

If the heat line-up looked familiar, it was because it was the exact same draw as the the 2A.  Funny how that can happen with a blind draw.

The U-48 had a broken strut and had to move it out of the pit area to do a little welding, but they were able to get it done and get back on the water for Heat 3A.

It was the race-before-the-race that determined the outcome.  The U-5 in lane one and the U-7 in lane three had sandwiched the U-16 in lane two.  Turned out the U-5 and U-7 were too quick to the exit pin and were penalized before the race even started.

That gave Villwock a relatively easy run to the finish.

It wasn't so easy for everyone else.  Brian Perkins and Ken Muscatel nearly collided on the first lap.  Kelly lost power and had to re-start.  After the re-start, he ran through the roostertail of the U-7, went up in the air and came down minus part of his sponson.

HEAT 3A RESULTS

  1. U-16 Elam - Dave Villwock (400 points)
  2. U-48 Albert Lee - Brian Perkins (300 points)
  3. U-25 Jarvis Disaster Recovery - Ken Muscatel (225 points)
  4. U-5 FormulaBoats.com - Jeff Bernard (169 points)
    ONE LAP PENALTY
  5. U-7 Graham Trucking - J. Michael Kelly (127 points)
    ONE LAP PENALTY

"They washed me down near the exit pin," said Villwock on WORX, talking about the U-5 and U-7.  That forced Villwock to move to a new lane to avoid contact.  "They got penalized for that."

Heat 3B

Same draw as 2B and similar results.

The U-3 was unable to make the call.

J.W. Myers and Kip Brown led the pack over the start line, but both had jumped the gun.  Even though Myers stayed in first place trhough the turn, Steve David was able to take it easy.

David and the U-1 cruised to victory.  It also set up a great weekend of points for Greg Hopp, who added another second place finish.  Hopp has two 2nds and a 3rd for the weekend which moved him into 3rd place in total points.

HEAT 3B RESULTS

  4. U-17 ActiVwater - Kip Brown (169 points)
ONE LAP PENALTY- JUMPED THE GUN

    DNS.  U-3 Chrysler-Jeep - Jimmy King

"Our goal was to kind of adjust, not do any quick starts and not get any penalties," said Greg Hopp on WORX.  "Saw the other two go early, we just sat back and took the points."

It was the third straight first place in heat racing for Steve David.
