Yakima Firefighters Save Kids From Hot Car

Posted: Updated:

YAKIMA--Yakima firefighters rescue two young children left inside a locked vehicle Friday.

Firefighters say the children weren't even five years old.

It happened at the Yakima Athletic Club along South 24th Avenue, just before three this afternoon.

Crews broke a window to get the two kids out.  They were in the car for less than ten minutes.

But, with near triple-digit temperatures, firefighters say that's too long.

"It doesn't take long on a day like today for that car to reach dangerously high temperatures, especially for young children," Russ Reser, Yakima Fire Department, said.

Reser said in this weather it's never safe to leave young kids or pets in the car, even if the air conditioner is running or the windows are down.

Firefighters treat these situations as emergencies.  They will break into a car without trying to locate the owner.
