Seattle, WASH. -

Heat 2A

This could be the highest octane heat draw this season with most of the really fast boats in the same heat.  And the lane assignments, based on reverse finish from the first set of heats, put Steve David and Dave Villwock in lanes 3 and 4 respectively.

Boat draw for Heat 2A - by lane

  1. U-3 Grandview on the Lake - Jimmy King
  2. U-7 Graham Trucking - J. Michael Kelly
  3. U-1 Oh Boy! Oberto - Steve David
  4. U-16 Ellstrom Elam Plus - Dave Villwock
  5. U-5 FormulaBoats.com - Jeff Bernard
  6. U-9 Jones Racing - David Williams

On the inside, Jimmy King pulled the U-3 across the line right at the mark and outran the pack into the first turn.  Steve David in the U-1 slotted into second place.  Villwock, in third, got caught in rough water not only from the front-runners but from the other boats running close by.

King pulled a full roostertail lead in the second lap with the U-1 in 2nd and the U-16 back a ways in 3rd.  The question with the U-3 lately is whether the equipment will hold together.  King had barely finished the last heat when the Allison piston engine burped.  But this time, the Cooper team had the U-3 humming and it showed what it can do when things are running right.

King cruised to the victory.  David finished second, holding off Dave Villwock.

"We're shocking ourselves," said King on KIRO-TV.  "We've been waiting a long time for this.  We knew it was in there."

"If we can keep it in one piece, we can have a good day."  The good day started with the fastest competition lap of the weekend so far, more than 146 mph.

"We knew he was fast," said Steve David.

Heat 2B

J.W. Myers was in the seat of the U-37 after Jean Theoret opted to sit out after running a heat on Saturday.  Mike Webster's U-22 broke its gearbox and withdrew before the race.  Here were the lane assignments going into the heat.

Boat draw for Heat 2B - by lane

  1. U-22 Miss Airbag Service.com - Mike Webster
  2. U-100 Mirage Boats - Greg Hopp
  3. U-48 Albert Lee - Brian Perkins
  4. U-17 USNW Express - Kip Brown
  5. U-37 Hoss Mortgage Investors - J.W. Myers
  6. U-25 Buffalo Federal Savings Bank - Ken Muscatel

J.W. Myers led the boats across the line and looked like he absolutely nailed the start.  In fact, there was a question about whether he went too early, but officials said it was clean.  Kip Brown in the U-17, who has a surprisingly fast boat this season, was right on his hip and pulled even with Myers actually taking the lead briefly coming out of the turn.

Hopp, in third, saw his boat go dead but managed to get it re-started.  That allowed Brian Perkins in the U-48 to slip into third.

"This whole crew, they deserve this," said Jean Theoret on KIRO.  "He took a great start and finished right there."

"Boat ride's good," said U-17's Kip Brown on KIRO-TV.  "We're getting better and better every time.  Unfortunately I got a little close to J.W. so I had to let off the throttle."

After the heat, ABRA officials assessed a 150 point penalty for encroachment.  Brown moved out on Greg Hopp in the U-100 in turn 2 of lap 1.
