KENNEWICK, Wash-- After multiple tries to get a new elementary school built in kennewick, construction is now underway.
Right now it doesn't look like much. Crews are in the early stages of putting up the yet-to-be-named school in the Badger Canyon Area.
The school will be 51,000 square feet. School leaders say it's designed to cut down on overflowing conditions at other schools.
"A school on the west side made a lot of sense to us," says Doug Carl, facilities manager for the Kennewick School District. "Cottonwood as a housing development continues to grow, we have a lot of our students here. They had a lot of land, so the match was pretty easy to make."
Construction will take about a year. The school will open the fall of 2010. Bids on the site came in low, which Carl says saved taxpayers close to $2 million.
