ABRA's Unlimited Hydroplane championship race tightensPosted: Updated:
The hole in Lake Washington that knocked Steve David and the U-1 Oh Boy! Oberto about three lanes to the North during the final heat of the Chevrolet Cup at Seafair also knocked a big hole in the defending National Champion's 2009 High Points lead.
The misfortune that befell challenger Dave Villwock and the U-16 Ellstrom Elam Plus the previous week at the Lamb Weston Columbia Cup in the Tri-Cities had given the Oberto team a nice lead going into Seafair. But as David nursed an ailing turbine engine home in the final, he was passed by the third, fourth and fifth place boats, dropping from 300 second place points to just 95 for a sixth place finish.
Villwock's 400 point first place finish capped a strong weekend which saw him cut team Oberto's lead to just 249 points, with two events left in the 2009 season.
The unlimited hydroplanes will be in Evansville, Indiana for Thunder on the Ohio August 21 -23 before heading to Doha, Qatar for the Oryx Cup November 19 - 21. The 2009 High Point Championship is expected to come down to the final event of the season, with the championship being decided in Doha.
