Good start for Yakima's gang emphasis patrols

Posted: Updated:

YAKIMA--It's been a little more than a week since gang emphasis patrols began in Yakima, and police say they're making lots of progress.

In an e-mail to City Council, Yakima Police Department Chief Sam Granato detailed what YPD's done this week, and the numbers are staggering:  police arrested 20 suspected gang members, seized more than 50 guns, and confiscated hundreds of thousands of dollars, both in cash and illegal drugs.

One council member is happy with the results so far.

"[The patrols are] stopping it for the time being," Kathy Coffey said.  "It's not a long-term fix by any means, but it does stop [crime] and that in and of itself is good for right now."

Coffey wants to focus on more preventive measures to keep kids out of gangs, but the city's strapped for cash right now, so money for those long-term solutions will probably have to come from federal or private sources.
