Ike: A Season of ChangePosted: Updated:
YAKIMA, Wash. -- One of the teams looking to turn some heads this high school football season is Ike. The team finished just 5-5 last year and is now without a couple of it's stars.
"We're undefeated man," said Ike Head Coach Dan Eyman. "The first day of practice is awesome."
But, the Ike football team has lost a lot. They lost starting quarterback Taylor Elmo and wide receiver Jordan Gaut. But, head coach Dan Eyman says this team is still going to be pretty good.
"You know that's high school football," said Eyman. "You're going to have kids for three or four years and then they are going to move on and you have to find some kids to replace them.'
"Those are big shoes to fill," said Defensive End Ryan Watson. "Obviously, both are college players now but I think we have some players ready to step up."
Taylor Elmo is at the University of Idaho. Jordan Gaut heads to Central to play receiver.
"There are some things that our quarterback isn't going to be able to do that Taylor could do, especially running the ball," said Eyman. "But you try to adapt and run some different schemes that fit your personnel a little better."
The Cadets didn't make it to the playoffs with Gaut and Elmo last year so what will this year be like?
"I think people are going to be pleasantly surprised because I think a lot of people thought we lost a lot of players and might be down but we have a great senior group of kids and it's a large group of them and we're hungry so I think we'll be alright."
"We're just ready to go," said Watson. "It's been a long offseason. Hopefully we can work hard and get things started and have a successful season."
The Cadets start their '09 football journey September 4th against Davis at Zaepfel Stadium.
