Opt-out car tab fees take effect in September

Posted: Updated:

KENNEWICK, Wash--  A lot of you may have received a renewal form for your car tabs in the mail.  It might say you owe $50.  But did you know starting next month, that $50 includes an optional $5 fee?

In other words, you really owe $45.  The reason for the extra money is the new opt-out fee that goes to state parks.  It's easy to get out paying, but if you're not reading carefully, you might just pay without knowing.

KNDU talked to a number of drivers that say they're fine with donating $5, they just want it clear they're being billed extra.

Only drivers that are renewing their tabs come September will see the extra money.  If you've already taken care of it for the year, you're all set.  If you don't want to pay, just check the *no donation* box.
