Richland, Wa- Many young families are getting ready to send their children off to their first day of school. In Richland,  they're getting the school ready for its first day.

Parents and students held a work party today at Delta high school, a new public school that specializes in math, science and technology.

The 100 freshmen, their parents, and faculty today landscaped the campus with shrubs and flowers donated by C&M Nursery, unpacked boxes and assembled furniture for the classrooms.

School principal Deidre Holmberg says it's a grass roots effort. "This is for us, by us, and really gives everbody a chance to make this place their own."

Nearly 300 students throughout the Tri-Cities applied to be part of Delta's freshman class.

The school will add one grade per year until it has about 400 students.
