2 Fort Lewis soldiers killed in Afghanistan

FORT LEWIS, Wash. - Two Fort Lewis soldiers have been killed in Afghanistan. The Defense Department says 20-year-old Pfc. Jonathan Yanney, of Litchfield, Minnesota, and 21-year-old Spc. Troy Tom, of Shiprock New Mexico were killed Tuesday by a roadside bomb in Afghanistan's Kandahar Province.

Tom was an infantryman and Yanney a fire support specialist. Both were on their first deployment with the 5th Stryker brigade.

The 3,900-member unit is the first Stryker brigade to deploy to Afghanistan. T

he News Tribune of Tacoma reports Tom and Yanney were the 318th and 319th service members with Washington ties to die in military operations since 2001.

They were killed the same day that First Sgt. Jose Crisostomo of Spanaway was killed by a roadside bomb in Kabul.
